Statement from Sarah Ludford, former Member of European Parliament for London:
“It is devastating that in the 21st century we are again having to confront so many fundamental rights breaches based on prejudice and hatred in regard ethnicity, race, culture or religion. I’m appalled at racist or sectarian violence wherever it is happening in the world and have a track record of working to protect Jews, Muslims including Ahmadis, Christians, Baha’is, and others. The persecution of Christians in the Middle East, most recently by ISIS in Iraq, is a shocking breach of all domestic and international human rights norms. I call on the Iraqi government, the UN and the entire international community to support the victims of this terrible abuse, to provide them with shelter and to enable them to return to their homes in peace and security. I urge the government of the Kurdistan Regional Government to continue to provide refuge and commend them for their humanitarian response.”
