Archbishop Bashar Warda's Visit to the UK
During a six–day visit to the UK, Mgr Bashar Warda, the Chaldean Archbishop of Erbil, Iraq had a very busy schedule which included meetings at the House of the Lords, talks and interviews. Below are some highlights of his visit:
Monday, 9th February:
Talk at the House of the Lords
Mgr. Warda was invited to speak at an event hosted by The Lord Alton of Liverpool at the House of the Lords during his recent visit to the UK.
"What we are seeing is worse for the world than what happened in Afghanistan, with more and more young people going to fight with Daesh. Military action is needed - powerful force - to get them out of our villages." The archbishop told UK peers and MP’s. (BBC News – Feb 10th).
ICIN also was invited to attend and was represented by Dr. Faiz Tappouni (Chairman of Trustees), Dr. Suha Rassam (Trustee), Mr Joseph Bahoshy (Treasurer & Trustee), Mr Basil Marogy (Council member)
Dr Tappouni gave a brief speech highlighting the recurrence of the persecution of Christians in the region and introducing the charity and our projects to the attendees.

Wednesday, 10th February:
11:30am Meeting with Cardinal Vincent Nicols
5:30pm Mass at Westminster Cathedral
The Archbishop gave the homily at the 5:30pm Mass at the Cathedral.
6:30pm “Crisis and Hope in Iraq”; ACN & ICIN's joint event, Westminster Cathedral Hall
The Aid to the Church in Need /ICIN joint event was held after the evening Mass to raise awareness of the plight of the Iraqi Christians and to hear first hand from the Archbishop about the current situation.
Neville Kyrke-Smith, ACN UK’s National Director, gave a brief introduction and showed a video of the displaced taken by ACN during a recent visit to Erbil.
The Archbishop talk followed in which a summary of the current situation in Iraq was given to a full Hall. The attendees learned about the development of events since the Mosul crisis began, details about aid and resources, what has been done so far and what is urgently needed now and in the very near future to put an end to their suffering.
ICIN's Treasurer and Trustee Mr Joseph Bahoshy, ended the event with an introduction to ICIN going briefly through the work that has been done in the last 9 months since the Mosul Crisis started, and thanking the Archbishop for all his work to help our brothers and sisters in Iraq.
Friendly discussions and chats followed over tea and coffee.
Thursday, 12th February:
11am- 1pm: Special Guest Lecture at Centre for Eastern Christianity, Heythrop College, London “Christianity in contemporary Iraq: present challenges and future expectations”
Other guest speakers included ICIN trustee and co-founder Dr Suha Rassam. Her talk was concerned with "Iraqi Christians in the Jordanian Diaspora". Click here for a full list of speakers
3.30pm: Meeting with Baroness Anelay, Minister of State for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
6.30pm: Meeting and Supper with ICIN members.
